July 11, 2008 Cranbrook Mayor Ross Priest, together with East Kootenay MLA Bill Bennett and Columbia Kootenay MP Jim Abbott are pleased to announce that an agreement has been formally signed with Delta Airlines to provide non-stop international service between Canadian Rockies International Airport (Cranbrook) and Salt Lake City, Utah. “This is the first of many positive stories that will flow from our airport” said Mayor Priest, “everyone involved has worked diligently on this for many years, and it is gratifying to see how much can happen when governments and the private sector all pull together”. Delta will begin the jet service in December of this year with three flights a week. The two hour trip between Cranbrook and Salt Lake City will enable East Kootenay residents to connect seamlessly to Delta flights anywhere in the world while at the same time, open massive new markets for regional tourism products. “Over 65 million new travelers can get from their homes throughout the United States to Cranbrook in less than half a day” commented MLA Bill Bennett. “The tourism potential is enormous”. Flights will commence December 17, 2008. January 14, 2008 Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) takes possession of their new Customs and Immigrations facility at the airport. The new permanent location will staff full time Customs agents as part of the overall airport expansion strategy. October 16, 2007 International Arrivals area opens. May 31, 2007 Work on the Air Terminal Building continues to progress. International arrivals area scheduled to open mid October. October 23, 2006 Runway project completed with ZERO delays or cancellations to scheduled air traffic as a result of the expansion program. Instrument Landing System commissioning completed by NavCanada and now fully operational. October 12, 2006 8,000 foot runway opens and operating at full length. July 17, 2006 Earthworks move to the south end of the runway as the north footprint is complete. Paving of the north runway expected to commence August 1. June 5, 2006 Construction commences on the new Air Terminal Building international arrivals area including Canada Border Services Agencies new Customs facility. May 1, 2006 Construction on the north end of the runway project commences with earth works and drainage/electrical works. April 24, 2006 Cranbrook City Council awards the Air Terminal Building contract to Tri City Contracting of Kamloops, British Columbia. April 24, 2006 Cranbrook City Council awards Phase 2 Runway Paving and Electrical to Interoute Construction of Crescent Valley, British Columbia. April 14, 2006 Federal funding in the amount of $4.5M is announced during a special ceremony at the airport by Jim Abbott, Member of Parliament for the Kootenay/Columbia Region. March 13, 2006 Cranbrook City Council awards Phase I Earth Works and Utilities contract to Mackay Contracting of Cranbrook, British Columbia. February 24, 2006 Tender documents for the Air Terminal Building have been finalized and will be available to interested parties on Monday February 27th at YVR Airport Services offices in Vancouver and on Tuesday February 28th at the Airport Manager’s office in Cranbrook. A plan room will be set up at the Airport Management’s Office (9:30 am to 4 pm Monday to Friday) and all information will also be posted in the BC Construction Association’s electronic plan room. January 9, 2006 McFarlane Green presented 50% terminal building design to Cranbrook City Council including artist renditions of the terminal building layout. YVRAS Project Manager Kevin Johnston delivered a positive budget update and status report on the runway project. December 15, 2005 Both Terminal Building and Airside design continue to progress with 50% design of Air Terminal Building complete and 25% of Runway design complete. November 24, 2005 Western Economic Diversification agrees to fund 95% of a $130,000 International Strategic Marketing initiative to promote the airport in advance of the scheduled Spring 2007 completion date. Area resorts have agreed to fund the remaining 5%. October 16, 2005 McFarlane Green Architects complete the value engineering study on the Air Terminal Building options resulting in Cranbrook City Council's decision to pursue the recommended option to renovate and expand the existing facility. September 19, 2005 Cranbrook City Council hires Associated Engineering as successful proponents for runway extension design and construction services. August 25, 2005 The City of Cranbrook hosts a "Sense of Place" seminar with community leaders and stakeholders to explore regional options for terminal building design themes. August 15, 2005 Cranbrook City Council approves the new 8000-foot runway configuration by adding 1500 feet to the north end and 500 feet to the south end to facilitate direct flight from North America and limited European operations. July 18, 2005 City of Cranbrook hires McFarlane Green Architects as successful proponents to design an expanded air terminal building. April 17, 2005 Provincial funding in the amount of $4.5M is announced during a special ceremony at the airport by Bill Bennett, MLA for the East Kootenay Region.
